Organizations
of St. George's
MEN’S
CLUB
President:
Bill Case
If
you show up at the Church on the second Saturday of each month at
8:00 AM you will see twenty to thirty men of St. George’s parish.
We will be blinking back Saturday morning sleep and
salivating at the sweet smells of breakfast emanating from Hasler
Hall kitchen. The men
responsible for these smells and delicious breakfasts each month are
Mark Borgeson and his able assistant, Gunther Austin.
Club members are at the Church for fellowship, spiritual and
intellectual stimulation, and ministry.
While we’re at it, we have a lot of fun too.
Each man of the parish is warmly invited to join us each
second Saturday.
Every
organization needs people to take specific responsibilities.
This year the following men have stepped up to plate: Bill
Case, President; Jim Rankin, Vice President; Dave Dievendorf,
Treasurer; Joe Halbert, Secretary; Monte Nelson, Chaplain.
Perhaps
you have an undone parish project, an unmet parish need, or an
unfulfilled parish dream in mind. Please know that any club member,
and especially those mentioned above, can be apprised of the
challenge. We have
members who are skilled in Finance, Gardening, Photography, Tile
Restoration, Painting, and General Handyman work, plus other men who
haven’t yet told us what they’re good at.
If we have what it takes to help the St. George’s men’s
club will shoulder the burden and get it done.
Finally,
but not in order of importance, the men’s club holds itself open
to men of the parish who haven’t found us yet.
We want you to be with us and know that if you come you will
find men, just like yourself, looking for the Holy Spirit to show us
the way to more meaningful ministry and fuller life.
MUSIC/CHOIR
Organist/Choir
Director:
Rich Cook
St. George’s Choir has
experienced another year of growth during 1999. The commitment of
each choir member has made it possible for us to perform some of the
great classics by Handel, Franck, Mozart, Beethoven, Faure and Bach,
as well as some uplifting Gospel numbers. It’s been a year of
variety.
I personally want to thank the
choir for their consistent attendance and hard work. I appreciate
the support of the staff and encouragement of the congregation in
general. The kinds words and even applause a couple of times have
given us the “shot in the arm” to help us continue on.
A special thanks you needs to go
to Diane Sawyers for her assistance throughout the year and
beautiful solos. And also to Ted Teaford for his fine solos during
1999.
It has been a special joy to be on the team with Marni,
Charlotte and Sam. Now I look forward to moving ahead to new heights
under the leadership of Albert.
OBLATION
BEARERS
Coordinator:
Virginia D’Amico
Oblation
Bearers are members of the congregation who carry the people’s
offering of bread and wine to the altar at the Holy Eucharist. In
the year 1999, about 100 people, including singles, couples and
families participated. If you would like to share in this ministry,
at either the 8am or the 10:15am service, please call Georgia at the
church office (949) 837-4530, or Virginia D’Amico at (949)
458-2652.
OUTREACH
Coordinator:
Dave Nichols
St.
George’s Outreach was involved in a number of activities last
year. We sponsored a
clothing drive for Olive Crest Children’s Home as well as a fund
raiser for Heifer Project International, a relief organization that,
among other things, assists needy families by providing them farm
animals and equipment. Last
November, we sponsored a Corazon house building project.
Volunteers from St. George have spent a day building a house
for a family in Tijuana. Outreach
holds monthly meetings, and although our attendance has been low, we
have managed to continue to meet our ongoing obligations, including
overseeing the making of sack lunches for the Episcopal Service
Alliance, an Orange County organization that assists our County’s
homeless, and sponsoring Episcopal Missionaries in South America.
One
of Outreach’s responsibilities is to distribute 10% of bequests
made to St George’s to Outreach functions.
In the coming weeks we will be asking for the
congregation’s assistance in choosing organizations worthy of our
support. Also, in the
upcoming year, we hope to sponsor volunteer efforts for Habitat for
Humanity, Corazon, and other local assistance organizations.
PASTORAL
CARE COMMISSION
Coordinators:
The Rev. Sam D’Amico
& Mariane Brouwer
The Pastoral Care Commission has
the responsibility for the pastoral care of approximately 50
shut-ins, as well as all Episcopalians who enter any hospital and
either register as Episcopalians upon their entry or notify the
parish office. Our goal is to maintain contact with all
Episcopalians in hospitals every day and to minister to communicants
who are not able to come to church. This is possible only with the
cooperation of our parishioners who keep the parish office informed.
We have no other way of knowing when one of our people needs
pastoral care.
The clergy are very grateful for
the cooperation of Ellen and Roger Norquist, who direct the work of
the Lay Eucharistic Ministers by assigning to them the visitation of
shut-ins every Sunday after the worship services at church. Their
constant communication with the clergy has enabled us to do the
Commission’s work effectively.
We thank the lay members of the
Commission and congratulate those who have served throughout the
year by phone calls to shut-ins and other means of maintaining
communication. It included recognizing special occasions in their
lives, as well as, arranging flower deliveries every Sunday.
Well-done, good and faithful servants!
