Community Outreach - What can I do for others?

St. George’s has a long history of community involvement and continues to seek ways to serve our immediate and global neighbors. Some of the ways parishioners have been involved include donating time and effort to:

Episcopal Relief and DevelopmentCorazon ProgramDurable Medical Equip Loan ProgramLay Eucharistic VisitorOutreach CommitteeTransportation Ministry

Corazon. St. George’s teams have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with residents of Tecate, Mexico to build-a-house-in-a-day, as part of the nonprofit Corazon’s mission to help our neighbors south of the border help themselves and enrich our own lives and experiences in the process.

Durable Medical Equipment Loan Program. This program makes medical equipment available to those in need. Our inventory includes such items as wheelchairs, walkers and canes.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). St. George’s supports the ministry of ERD, the international relief and development agency of The Episcopal Church. ERD partners with local first-responder agencies in at least 40 countries throughout the world to aid in natural disasters and emergencies.  We regularly support ERD’s mission and ministry in such areas as alleviating hunger and improving food supplies in impoverished areas; creating economic opportunities and strengthening communities, promoting health and fighting disease and rebuilding communities affected by disaster.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors. Our Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEVs) take communion to our sick and disabled parishioners, in their homes and in a number of retirement communities. It is an important link to the community.

LGBT
Network and ministry energetically and enthusiastically participates in the life of the parish and community, educates about issues of sexual orientation, hosting such events as the recent viewing of the award-winning film, of “For the Bible Tells Me So” and other community special events. The LGBT group meets once a month.

Outreach Committee. The St. George’s outreach committee reaches into the community in a variety of ways, supporting ministries that serve those living with HIV/AIDS, the homeless and the economically disadvantaged through the South Orange County area. The church facilities are also another kind of outreach, providing meeting space for numerous community, youth and 12-step programs.

South County Outreach. We support the South County Outreach agency’s multi-faceted social service programs through volunteerism and donations. The barrels in our courtyard are filled with canned goods, food and other items for distribution to the needy.

Transportation Ministry. Volunteers provide rides to and from church for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.
